The Darwin Incident anime, also searched as Darwin's Incident and known in Japan as Darwin Jihen, aired 13 episodes from January 6 to March 31, 2026, on TV Tokyo, and in the US and Canada it streams on Prime Video with an English dub. Its hero is Charlie, a 15-year-old "humanzee," half human and half chimpanzee, smarter than any person and stronger than any chimp. His adoptive parents send him to an ordinary Missouri high school. It goes about as well as you would expect, and then an animal-rights terror group decides Charlie belongs to them.

The Darwin Incident Release Date and Global Streaming Schedule

The Darwin Incident premiered on TV Tokyo and its affiliates on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at midnight, which means the first episode technically aired in the first minutes of January 7. Its finale, Episode 13, "Will," aired in the same slot at the end of March 31. That is why some listings show January 7 to April 1. It is the same run. BS TV Tokyo and AT-X followed with their own broadcasts.

Prime Video vs. Crunchyroll: Where to Watch

Prime Video is the official home of The Darwin Incident in the US and Canada, with English subtitles and an English dub. Prime Video also lists audio in Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Thai, so the show was clearly built for a global audience. Despite what search suggestions imply, The Darwin Incident is not on Crunchyroll or Netflix. In Japan, Prime Video streamed it right after the TV broadcast, and the official anime site has the full schedule.

Broadcast Time & Episode Rollout

New episodes aired weekly, and Prime Video in North America released them with the English dub from the very first episode, starting January 6 at 7:30 a.m. Pacific. That makes it one of the few Winter 2026 shows where dub fans never had to wait.

The schedule was simple. The story is not, and it asks one question it never lets go of.

The Darwin Incident Plot: Why Are Only Humans Special?

Fifteen years ago, an animal liberation group called the ALA freed a pregnant chimpanzee from captivity. Her baby was Charlie, the world's only human-chimpanzee hybrid. Raised in rural Missouri by Burt and Hannah Stein, Charlie is calm, polite and frighteningly intelligent. When he starts high school, he meets Lucy Eldred, a brilliant classmate who struggles to connect with people, and the two become the kind of friends who understand each other without explanation.

The rest of the world is not so understanding. Charlie's existence sparks protests, online pile-ons, legal fights over whether he counts as a person, and terrorism. The show uses him to ask the question on its own poster: why are only humans special?

What makes it stand out is how little it preaches. A Japanese anime set entirely in small-town America, it lets every side make its case: the parents who just want their son safe, the neighbors who are scared of him, the activists who see him as a cause and the officials who see him as a legal problem. Charlie listens to all of them with the same unsettling calm, and the show never tells you whose argument is right. It trusts you to sit with that discomfort, which is rare for a TV anime and a big part of why the manga won awards.

The ALA and Two Explosive Arcs

The ALA, led by the soft-spoken and terrifying Rivera Feyerabend, believes Charlie is the perfect symbol for its cause and will do anything to bring him in. The back half of the season is built around two arcs: the Red Pill shooting arc, which began on February 10, and the Lucy kidnapping arc, which began on March 3. Both turn a slow-burn character drama into a thriller, and both force Charlie to decide how much of his strength he is willing to use.

That choice depends on the people around him.

Charlie, Lucy and Rivera: The Characters of The Darwin Incident

Atsumi Tanezaki voices Charlie with a stillness that makes every rare burst of emotion land, and Mitsuho Kambe voices Lucy. Akio Otsuka gives Rivera a calm, reasonable voice that makes the ALA leader far more frightening than a shouting villain would be. Here are the main characters with their Japanese voice actors (CV).

Manga Guide: Where the Anime Picks Up

The Darwin Incident is a manga by Shun Umezawa, serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon since June 2020. It won the 15th Manga Taisho award in 2022 and the general category of the 50th Kodansha Manga Award in 2026, and 11 volumes were out in Japan as of June 2026. Kodansha USA publishes it in English, with releases that began in September 2023.

The anime ends with the Lucy kidnapping arc, and at least five volumes of the manga remain unadapted, so there is plenty of material for more. No Season 2 has been announced as of October 2026, but the show has not been cancelled either, and volume sales rose after the anime aired.

One last tip: The Darwin Incident has nothing to do with Darwin's Game, the 2020 battle royale anime. The names are similar, which is why the two keep showing up together in search, but the stories could not be more different.
