A Certain Dark Item (Toaru Anbu no ITEM) is the Toaru spin-off about ITEM, Academy City's four-girl dark side squad, and it has been airing in Japan since October 9, 2026, with new episodes streaming on Crunchyroll every Friday at 8:30 a.m. PT. For the first time, Shizuri Mugino, the Level 5 who usually shows up as a terrifying obstacle in Index and Railgun, is the lead. Her voice actress, Ami Koshimizu, has just given a long interview about it, and her advice may surprise longtime fans: newcomers should start right here. Below you'll find the schedule, why the show has three different English names, who's in ITEM and the interview highlights, all without spoilers.
A Certain Dark Item Release Date and Where to Watch
A Certain Dark Item premiered on Friday, October 9, 2026, on Tokyo MX, BS11 and AT-X. Outside Japan, Crunchyroll streams it, and Muse Communication holds the license in Southeast Asia.
Crunchyroll Release Time
New episodes land on Crunchyroll on Fridays at 8:30 a.m. PT (11:30 a.m. ET), which matches the Saturday 0:30 a.m. slot in Japan. One thing to watch for: Japan doesn't use daylight saving time, so when US clocks go back on November 1, simulcasts tied to Japanese broadcasts usually arrive an hour earlier on the clock, at 7:30 a.m. PT. Check Crunchyroll's schedule that week.

How Many Episodes Will A Certain Dark Item Have?
The official site hasn't announced an episode count. What we do know is that the light novel has seven volumes, and Ami Koshimizu said in her interview that this anime probably can't cover everything, which sounds like a single season that leaves room for more.
Before getting into the story, there's a naming problem worth clearing up, because it's probably why you had trouble finding this show.
Why Does A Certain Dark Item Have So Many Names?
The official Japanese title is とある暗部の少女共棲, and the last four characters (少女共棲) are printed with the reading アイテム, "ITEM," as a pun. Read literally, they mean something like "girls living together." That one design choice explains every name floating around:
| Name you'll see | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| A Certain Dark Item | The official English title on Crunchyroll |
| Toaru Anbu no ITEM / Toaru Anbu no Item | The title read the way the official ruby text spells it |
| Toaru Anbu no Shōjo Kyōsei | The same title read literally, ignoring the ruby |
| A Certain Dark Side's ITEM, A Certain Item of Dark Side | Fan and database translations from before Crunchyroll announced its title |
They're all the same show. The "girls living together" reading also matters, because that's exactly what the series is about.
What Is A Certain Dark Item About?
A Certain Dark Item follows ITEM, an elite squad of four girls who do Academy City's dirty work. The city, in western Tokyo, has 2.3 million residents, about 80% of them students, all ranked by psychic ability from Level 0 to Level 5. Behind that utopian image sit the "dark side" organizations that handle jobs the city can never admit to. ITEM is one of them.
The story kicks off when a fifth girl, Choubi Hanano, is assigned to the team. The official synopsis says her arrival pulls ITEM into a new kind of darkness, and describes the series as the daily life, bonds and deep, deep darkness of some very strange girls surrounded by violence and cruelty. In practice, that means missions and fights, but also shared meals, sleepovers and the girls' homes, which the main series never showed.
Where A Certain Dark Item Fits in the Toaru Timeline
It's set earlier than ITEM's appearances in the main series. Koshimizu explained that Frenda has only recently joined at this point, and that the anime shows the moment the team first meets Kinuhata. In other words, you're watching ITEM come together. Fans know ITEM from A Certain Magical Index, and from A Certain Scientific Railgun S, where the squad clashes with Mikoto Misaka, but this is the first time they're the main characters.
That shift puts five very different girls at the center. Here's who they are.
Who Are the Members of ITEM in Toaru?
ITEM's four core members are Shizuri Mugino, Frenda Seivelun, Rikou Takitsubo and Saiai Kinuhata. In this story they're joined by a fifth, Choubi Hanano, who was created for this spin-off.
Shizuri Mugino (CV: Ami Koshimizu)
ITEM's leader and Academy City's fourth-ranked Level 5. Her power, Meltdowner, locks electrons in a state between particle and wave and fires them as a beam. She plans the missions and fights on the front line. Self-centered and short-tempered, she can pass for a calm older-sister type, and she's also heir to a gang family that ignores law and morals. The official profile adds that she loves salmon bento and prefers rice to wheat.
Frenda Seivelun (CV: Maaya Uchida)
A blonde, blue-eyed Level 0 and the only member who fights without powers, using close combat and explosive traps. She's cheerful, makes friends as easily as breathing and cracks jokes even mid-fight. She's also one of the few people who can happily cling to Mugino. She loves canned mackerel and has a little sister, Fremea.
Rikou Takitsubo (CV: Aya Suzaki)
ITEM's tracker. Her Level 4 power, AIM Stalker, records a target's AIM diffusion field so she can search for and follow them, which makes her the team's trump card. Gentle and spacey, she always seems to be receiving signals from somewhere, and she's rarely out of her pink tracksuit.
Saiai Kinuhata (CV: Chinatsu Akasaki)
The newcomer, who lands in ITEM by sheer luck. Her Level 4 power, Offense Armor, controls the nitrogen in the air, so she becomes the shield the team was missing. A former test subject whose project was shut down, she has nowhere to go back to and doesn't much care, as long as she has food and a bed. She's also obsessed with weird B- and C-grade movies.
Choubi Hanano (CV: Hana Hishikawa)
The "fifth girl," placed in ITEM by their handler. Officially a Level 0 with an unknown ability, she's a disguise expert who can copy anyone's looks, voice, habits and even fingerprints, which makes her an infiltration specialist. She's timid, always nervous and, in the official profile's words, a soaked chihuahua with miraculously bad timing.
Hanano doesn't appear anywhere else in the Toaru series, and Koshimizu thinks that's the key to the whole show.
Ami Koshimizu Interview: What Mugino's Voice Actress Said
Ami Koshimizu, who first voiced Shizuri Mugino in a PlayStation Portable game, gave a two-page interview to Animate Times, published on October 19, 2026. She knows exactly where the main series takes these characters, and she was careful not to spoil it. Here are the highlights in our own words, with no spoilers.
She Had to Double-Check That Mugino Was the Lead
When she heard about the anime, Koshimizu's first reaction was surprise, to the point of confirming that Mugino really was the main character. She assumed the other ITEM girls were cute and popular, but she had no idea how big Mugino's fan base was. Until now, Mugino had mostly been a villain whose job was to be as scary as possible, so she was curious, and a little nervous, about how Mugino would work as a heroine.
A Calmer Mugino, Seen From the Inside
In earlier series, Mugino was usually fighting in a corner or with no margin left. Here, the story is mostly told from her point of view, and the team is relaxed enough to chat while finishing missions. Koshimizu was struck by how calm Mugino is, and by how often the show reveals what she's actually thinking. Seeing the world through Mugino's eyes, she said, shows unexpected cute sides of her. She also said Mugino has real consideration for her teammates underneath it all. It's just hard to spot, and she doesn't think of them as disposable.
"Start Here" Is Her Advice to Newcomers
Koshimizu admitted that, because she knows ITEM's future, reading this story made her chest tighten, and the ordinary happy days felt even more precious. She even wished she could have met ITEM through this story first, without knowing what comes next. So her advice to new viewers is to start with A Certain Dark Item, because only they can watch it with a completely clean slate. For fans who have mixed feelings about Mugino after the main series, she said she won't ask them to love her, only to watch this as something a little separate.
Recording Felt Like a Club Reunion
The four main actresses have played ITEM together for years, so the booth felt familiar from episode 1, like old teammates getting together for one more match. When the four went out for yakiniku and Koshimizu asked how everyone was doing, the answer was "my knees are really starting to hurt," which she said summed up how comfortable they are together. She also confessed that her secret favorites are the comic-relief villains who show up and get thrown away almost immediately.
Hanano Is the Heart of the Story
Since Hanano joins ITEM here but never appears in the other series, Koshimizu said something clearly happens in between, and that this is the core of the whole show. She asked viewers to watch what Hanano's background is and how it changes ITEM's relationships, and she added that the anime probably won't tell the whole story, so continued support matters.
Koshimizu has been Mugino since her mid-20s and is now over 40. Behind her on this project is a team with deep Toaru roots.
A Certain Dark Item Staff, Studio and Theme Songs
J.C.Staff, the studio behind every Toaru anime so far, animates the series. Tatsuyuki Nagai, director of A Certain Scientific Railgun, directs, with Shōgo Yasukawa on series composition and Shigeki Kimoto on character design. Maiko Iuchi, a longtime Toaru composer, writes the music, and Jin Aketagawa is the sound director.
| Studio | J.C.Staff |
| Director | Tatsuyuki Nagai |
| Series composition | Shōgo Yasukawa |
| Character design | Shigeki Kimoto |
| Music | Maiko Iuchi |
| Opening theme | "Ghost Sequence" by East Of Eden |
| Ending theme | "Genshi Kuzushi (Meltdowner)" by Kishida Kyodan & The Akeboshi Rockets |
The ending theme is literally named after Mugino's power, which tells you whose show this is. If the anime hooks you, the next question is whether you can read ahead in English.
A Certain Dark Item Light Novel and Manga: Is There an English Version?
Not yet. The original light novel, written by Kazuma Kamachi and illustrated by Nilitsu, has been published by Dengeki Bunko since March 10, 2023, and volume 7 came out in Japan on October 9, 2026, the same day the anime premiered. A manga adaptation drawn by strelka has run in Dengeki Daioh since October 2023, with collected volumes out in Japan. No English edition of either has been announced.
That makes the anime the only official way to follow ITEM's story in English for now. So how is it actually turning out? Here's what I thought of the first two episodes.
Is A Certain Dark Item Worth Watching? Episode 1 and 2 Impressions
I'm watching A Certain Dark Item week by week, and I'll add my thoughts on new episodes here as they air. Here are my impressions of episodes 1 and 2.
Episode 1 Impressions
Light details from episode 1.
Can't believe we got another Toaru anime.
The episode was great, surprisingly humanized the ITEM team who seemed way more sociopathic before. Well Mugino still is, but Kinuhata and Takitsubo seem decent. Frenda obviously was already somewhat humanized in Railgun later on.
Liked the ability explanation, the kid had a pretty strong ability, potential Level 5 if he can do a huge AOE with it or control the direction of the matter manipulation he does.
Episode 2 Impressions
This part talks about what happens in episode 2.
You're telling me Shizuri has powers like that and she's not even on the podium? What kind of crazy OP shit do the ones above her have?
I had a feeling that ITEM are the bad guys in the premiere, but this episode definitely confirmed it. I didn't need Shizuri to tell Saiai that they're not the good guys. That was clear within the first 10 minutes. What was also clear is that Frenda is best girl so far.
I know they've got lasers and magic and shit, but I refuse to believe Frenda does not have powers. If she doesn't have powers like she claims that means every single bomb/missile/explosive are physical objects that take up space and she has to store somewhere. Where did she put them? Where are they coming from?
Going from them killing everyone in the building to Frenda taking Saiai shopping was quite the contrast. As soon as I saw scissors I knew what was going to happen. The tag was going to be cut off as soon as the employee said the account was frozen. At least we got to learn more about Shizuri's family and get a showcase of her hotness when she was talking to her servant/butler/whatever.
Looks like Choubi is going to be the focus of the next episode so I wonder what she's like.
Below are quick answers to the questions people ask most.
