To You in the Beyond (Doko Yori mo Tooi Basho ni Iru Kimi e) is a TMS Entertainment anime movie that opened in Japanese theaters on October 9, 2026, and its cast has just held a release-celebration stage greeting in Tokyo. The film adapts Akiko Abe's 2017 novel about a boy on a remote island who finds a girl claiming to come from 1974. If you live outside Japan, here's the short answer: no international theatrical or streaming release has been announced yet, but UK fans get festival screenings in November. Below you'll find the release status, what the cast said on stage and everything else to know before the film reaches you.

To You in the Beyond Release Date: In Japanese Theaters Since October 9, 2026

To You in the Beyond opened nationwide in Japan on Friday, October 9, 2026, distributed by Shochiku. It had its world premiere three months earlier, at Anime Expo 2026 in Los Angeles in July.

So the film is out in Japan. For most readers, though, the bigger question is when it reaches everyone else.

Is To You in the Beyond Coming to the US, UK, India or the Philippines?

No international theatrical release or streaming deal for To You in the Beyond had been announced as of October 15, 2026. Shochiku and Pony Canyon, who lead the production, haven't named a distributor or streaming service outside Japan yet, so searches for a US, India or Philippines release date don't have an answer yet.

UK Screenings at Scotland Loves Anime

The first confirmed screenings outside Japan since Anime Expo are in the UK, at the Scotland Loves Anime festival:

  • Glasgow: Friday, November 6, 3:10 p.m., Glasgow Film Theatre
  • London: Sunday, November 15, 12 noon, Picturehouse Central
  • Edinburgh: also on the festival's Edinburgh program; check the festival's official site for the final date and time

A festival slot often comes before a wider release deal, but it doesn't guarantee one.

Where to Watch To You in the Beyond

Right now, the only way to watch To You in the Beyond is in a theater. It isn't on Crunchyroll, Netflix or any other streaming service, and Japanese anime films usually stay in theaters for several months before a home release. Any site offering it for streaming today isn't official. We'll update this page as soon as a distributor is announced.

While the rest of the world waits, the cast in Japan is out promoting the film, and their first big stage greeting after release says a lot about what it's like to watch.

To You in the Beyond Stage Greeting: What the Cast Said

The cast held a release-celebration stage greeting on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at United Cinemas Toyosu in Tokyo, right after a screening on the film's third day in theaters. On stage were Hiiro Ishibashi (Kazuki Tsukigase), Anna Nagase (Nanao Aika), Wataru Hatano (Shuji Aiba), Nobuhiko Okamoto (Akimitsu Yano) and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Yoshiki Suga). For Hatano, Okamoto and Matsuoka, it was their first stage greeting for the film. Here are the highlights, with no plot spoilers.

Okamoto Recorded Without Knowing the Ending

Nobuhiko Okamoto said the film is full of things he personally loves: an island with strange customs, the feeling that something is going on and the mystery around Nanao. He singled out the ending, saying the way it pays off its foreshadowing is remarkably clean. The surprising part is that, during recording, he and Matsuoka only had half the script, so they watched the final act cold, just like the audience. He also admitted that Kazuki comes across far gloomier in the finished film than he noticed in the booth, and that if he recorded again, he might play Yano's jokes even harder to cheer him up.

Ishibashi on Playing a Boy Who Isn't Really There

Hiiro Ishibashi explained that even when Kazuki hangs out with his group of four friends, his mind is somewhere else. He listens, but nothing quite reaches him. That was a deliberate choice, and it's the emotional starting point of the film. Ishibashi closed the event by saying the movie hides so much foreshadowing that one viewing isn't enough, and that it gets richer the more you watch it.

Matsuoka and Hatano Bring the Laughs

Yoshitsugu Matsuoka plays Yoshiki, the classmate who keeps picking fights with Kazuki. He said Yoshiki's hostility comes from teenage jealousy, but his methods are petty, and he jokingly scolded his own character: instead of scheming from the sidelines, Yoshiki should just say how he feels. He also said Ishibashi's scream in the trailer was what made him want to see the film.

Wataru Hatano said he was surprised by how completely a story about teenagers pulled him in at his age. The director told him Shuji was born in Hokkaido, so he leaned into a rural, wide-open feel. Hatano himself grew up in landlocked Nagano, and he summed up his approach as "the sky, the sea, Shuji," which got a big laugh.

Nanao's Voice Actress Read the Novel in Middle School

Anna Nagase first read Akiko Abe's novel in middle school, after a friend recommended it. That same friend went to see the film and messaged her to say it was wonderful and still on their mind. It's a small story, but it shows how long this book has had readers in Japan.

The cast kept the plot under wraps on stage, and so will we. Here's the setup you can know going in.

What Is To You in the Beyond About? (Spoiler-Free)

To You in the Beyond follows Kazuki Tsukigase, a first-year high school student who leaves the city for a school on Tokishima, a remote island full of nature. The island has an inlet locals call the "spirited-away cove." One early-summer day, Kazuki finds a girl lying unconscious there. Her name is Nanao Aika, and she says she came from 1974.

Nanao is taken in by Takatsu, a gruff man who was at the cove when Kazuki found her. Kazuki keeps visiting her after school, the two slowly open up to each other, and it becomes clear that both are carrying secrets. The official site frames it as a story where the past and the present connect, and it lists four threads to watch: the cove, a secret, the "marebito" (visitors from beyond) and the year 1974.

Genre-wise, it's a youth romance with a mystery and a light supernatural element, closer to a quiet island drama than a fantasy adventure. Akiko Abe says on the official site that the film doesn't simply retrace her novel, and that she's glad it was allowed to change. Readers of the book can expect differences.

Those secrets belong to a small group of islanders, and the film gives them a strong voice cast.

To You in the Beyond Staff and Music

Junichi Wada, director of the HIGH CARD series, directs from a script by Sayaka Kuwamura, who wrote Josee, the Tiger and the Fish and Strobe Edge. Character designer and chief animation director hechima also worked on Chō Kaguya-hime!. TMS Entertainment's 6th Studio handled the animation. On the official site, Wada says he finished Abe's novel late one night and cried, and that the mix of loneliness and warmth he felt is exactly what he wanted to put on screen.

  • Score: Koji Nakamura, who formed the band Supercar and composer for Eureka Seven: AO. It's his first score for a feature-length anime film.
  • Theme song: "Olive" by singer-songwriter Tota (RECA Records)
  • Insert song: "Hōsenka" by Tota, written to carry the wind, salt air and sea colors of the island

Tota is best known for "Tsumugu," which has passed 2 billion combined plays on streaming and video platforms. For her, this film is also the first time one of her songs plays through cinema speakers. The music is new, but the story itself goes back almost a decade.

The To You in the Beyond Novel and Manga

The film adapts Akiko Abe's novel of the same name, published by Shueisha's Orange Bunko imprint in 2017. Abe became much better known in 2025, when her novel Kafune won the 22nd Japan Booksellers' Award (Hon'ya Taishō), one of Japan's biggest prizes chosen by bookstore staff.

There's also a manga adaptation by Haruka Chino, serialized on Shueisha's Tonari no Young Jump website since August 2025. Neither the novel nor the manga has an official English edition yet, so the movie may be the first way many English-speaking fans meet this story.

If you've been searching for the novel's ending, we won't spoil it here. Okamoto's comment about how cleanly the film ties everything together is the best reason to go in blind. Below are quick answers to the questions people ask most.
