Narumi's Weekdays is Kaiju No 8's official Gen Narumi spinoff: a four-episode original short anime, also released in English as Narumi's Week at Work, animated by Production I.G and streamed free on the TOHO animation YouTube channel every Saturday at 20:00 JST from September 5, 2026, with Crunchyroll carrying it worldwide. On the battlefield, Narumi is the Defense Force's ace, the man officially called Japan's strongest anti-kaiju combatant. Off it, he skips meetings, slides his paperwork onto anyone nearby and disappears into online games the second nobody is watching. This short is about the second guy, and it turns out he's just as fun to watch.

Narumi's Weekdays Release Date and Where to Watch

The Japanese title is 鳴海の平日 (Narumi no Heijitsu), which translates literally as "Narumi's Weekdays." Crunchyroll and most English-language outlets use Narumi's Week at Work, so if you're searching for either name, you're looking for the same show. It was first announced at Jump Festa 2026 alongside the final Kaiju No. 8 anime, and its trailer and four-episode run were confirmed in August 2026.

The release schedule was simple: one episode a week, every Saturday at 20:00 JST.

Official YouTube Stream vs. Crunchyroll & Global Feeds

The main home of Narumi's Weekdays is the official TOHO animation YouTube channel, where each episode premiered for free. No subscription, no sign-up: that makes it one of the easiest ways into the Kaiju No. 8 franchise, if you don't mind meeting Narumi before Kafka.

Outside Japan, Crunchyroll streams the short in the regions where it carries the main Kaiju No. 8 anime, which covers North America, Central and South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East and the CIS. For reference, 20:00 JST on a Saturday is 11:00 UTC: Saturday morning in the Americas and around midday in Europe. Crunchyroll is also where you'll find both seasons of the main series, which matters if you want the full picture of who Narumi is before you watch him fall asleep at his desk.

Episode Length & Format

This isn't a mini-season of the main story. Narumi's Weekdays is a short-form comedy built from quick episodes, focused entirely on the First Division's slice-of-life side: one strange work week told from the point of view of a captain who would rather be anywhere but the office. The official synopsis sets it up neatly: the strongest man in the Defense Force, a captain who skips every meeting, dodges every office task and spends his free time on the internet and games, finds his weekdays getting a lot less peaceful than he'd like.

It looks like the main series, too. Production I.G is behind the animation, with Shigeyuki Miya directing, Tetsuya Nishio as character designer and chief animation director, Yūta Bandō composing the music and Mahiro Maeda designing the kaiju. The story comes from Kizuku Watanabe, the creator of the Kaiju No. 8 RELAX spinoff manga, and Kōki Uchiyama returns as Narumi. That staff list explains why the short has the same polish as the TV anime, even when the action is a captain hiding from his own schedule.

Which brings us to the real reason anyone watches this: Narumi himself.

Who is Gen Narumi? The First Division Captain's Unfiltered Routine

Gen Narumi is the captain of the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force's First Division, the elite unit stationed in Tokyo, and he is consistently described as the strongest officer in the organization. In combat he's precise, fast and terrifying to watch. He reads a kaiju's next move before it makes it, and he treats impossible fights like a speedrun.

The joke, and the reason fans love him, is that none of that discipline survives contact with a Monday. Narumi's room is a fortress of delivery boxes, figures and gaming gear (the spinoff's key visual shows him sprawled on a mattress surrounded by exactly that). He treats meetings as optional, paperwork as someone else's problem and his own vice-captain as a full-time babysitter. He's childish, petty, loudly confident and often right, which makes him exhausting to work for and impossible to dislike.

That gap is what Narumi's Weekdays is built on. The main series shows you the captain on the battlefield; the spinoff shows you everything he does to avoid being a captain the rest of the time. If you only know him from a couple of big fights, the short fills in the person between them.

His relationships with the rest of the cast add to it. In the main story, Kikoru Shinomiya moves to the First Division and has to learn under a captain whose talent she respects and whose habits she can't stand. Kafka Hibino, the kaiju-powered hero of the series, crosses paths with Narumi in season 2, and their dynamic is pure friction: Narumi is unimpressed by everyone, and Kafka is used to being underestimated. The short leans into that ensemble energy, putting Narumi's worst habits in front of the people who have to deal with them every day.

So is any of this actually part of the story?

Is Narumi's Weekdays Canon to Kaiju No. 8?

Short answer: it's official, but it isn't main-story canon in the plot sense. Naoya Matsumoto's Kaiju No. 8 manga ran on Shonen Jump+ from July 2020 to July 2025 and ended at chapter 129. Narumi's Weekdays doesn't adapt any of those chapters. It's an original story conceived by Kizuku Watanabe, whose Kaiju No. 8 RELAX manga already turns the Defense Force into a workplace comedy.

Think of it the same way you'd think of the franchise's other side stories, like the novel Kaiju No. 8: Exclusive on the Third Division, which goes behind the scenes of Kafka's unit. These stories stay true to the characters (Narumi is exactly as lazy and exactly as strong as he is in the manga), but they don't change what happens in the main plot. You can skip them without missing a story beat, and you can watch them without spoiling one.

What they do add is texture. The main series moves fast once the big kaiju fights start, and it rarely has room to show the First Division just existing. A comedy short about Narumi's week gives his squad more personality before the heaviest fights of the story arrive in the anime, so those fights land a little harder.

And those fights are coming soon.

Kaiju No. 8 Season 3 and Franchise Timeline

The Kaiju No. 8 TV anime has aired 23 episodes across two seasons, from April 13, 2024 to September 27, 2025, with Production I.G animating and Studio Khara handling kaiju design. At Jump Festa 2026, the franchise announced Kaiju No. 8: Final Chapter, the closing anime that will adapt the rest of the manga through its ending. Narumi's Weekdays was announced on the same stage.

As of now, there's no confirmed premiere date for the Final Chapter, so anyone searching "Kaiju No. 8 Season 3 release date" will find guesses rather than an official date. That's exactly the gap the Narumi short fills. It keeps the franchise on screen, brings back the TV anime's staff and cast, and keeps Narumi front of mind before a final arc where the First Division matters a great deal.

The franchise is also staying busy offline: the cast is reuniting for a Defense Force Boot Camp event at Tachikawa Stage Garden in Tokyo on October 24, 2026. If you want a quick checklist to catch up before the Final Chapter, this is the order:

  • Kaiju No. 8 Season 1 (2024): Kafka joins the Defense Force.
  • Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 (2025): Narumi and the First Division step into the spotlight.
  • Narumi's Weekdays (September 2026): four episodes of the strongest captain avoiding his job.
  • Kaiju No. 8: Final Chapter (date not yet announced): the end of the story.

Now, the quick answers.
