The Champignon Witch anime release date was Thursday, January 8, 2026: Champignon no Majo (シャンピニオンの魔女) premiered in TBS's 1:58 AM JST late-night slot with a two-episode, one-hour opener, and Crunchyroll streams it outside Japan. All 12 episodes are out, so you can watch the whole season now. It looks cozy at first, but there's a catch. Luna's skin and breath are poisonous, and mushrooms sprout wherever she walks, so the kindest witch in the kingdom lives alone. Then she pulls a boy out of a river with a knife in his chest, and the curse inside him is far worse than hers.
Champignon Witch Release Date and Global Streaming Schedule
The season ran from January 8 to March 20, 2026 (JST), 12 episodes in total, animated by Typhoon Graphics and Qzil.la under director Yosuke Kubo. Japan got the first look. Everyone else waited for Crunchyroll, and in anime a delay of even a few hours is enough for spoilers to start circulating.
Champignon Witch Where to Watch: Simulcast Platforms & International Airing
Crunchyroll holds the international license, so outside Japan it's the place to watch Champignon Witch. Streaming listings show it on Crunchyroll in the UK, Canada, France, Portugal and South Africa, and in the UK and Canada it's also on the Crunchyroll Amazon Channel. We haven't seen an English dub announced, so expect Japanese audio with subtitles.
In Japan, d Anime Store and Hulu had the first stream, starting at 3:00 AM JST, about an hour after the TBS broadcast. Other Japanese services followed in a staggered rollout.
Broadcast Time & Episode Rollout
TBS led the Japanese broadcast, and the other channels followed within days:
| Channel / Service | Weekly Slot (JST) | Premiere |
|---|---|---|
| TBS | Thursdays, 1:58 AM (late night) | January 8, 2026: Episodes 1 & 2 |
| d Anime Store, Hulu (Japan) | 3:00 AM, after TBS | January 8, 2026: Episodes 1 & 2 |
| BS11 | Fridays, 11:00 PM | January 9, 2026: Episodes 1 & 2 |
| AT-X | Mondays, 11:00 PM | January 12, 2026: Episode 1 (Episode 2 on January 19) |
Japanese TV lists late-night shows under the previous evening's date. TBS's "Thursday 1:58 AM" slot actually airs in the early hours of Friday in Japan, which is 4:58 PM GMT, 11:58 AM ET and 8:58 AM PT on Thursday.
The double premiere wasn't just a launch-week bonus. Twelve episodes is a short season for a story this dense, and the one-hour opener gives the show time to establish Luna's lonely routine before it falls apart. AT-X was the exception: it split the first two episodes across two Mondays.
The schedule tells you when to watch. It doesn't explain why a council of black witches wants a teenage boy dead.
Curse and Connection: Luna, Lize, and the Deep Forest Mysteries
Light spoilers through the middle of the season.
Lize is a cursed boy fated to become "the end of all things," and Luna finds him floating in a river with a knife buried in his chest. When she pulls the blade out, a cursed mushroom appears. Whatever lives inside him is now her problem, and the black witches treat it as a crime. Their council, which appears as astral projections, finds Luna guilty and orders her to hand the boy over for execution. Only the Water Witch argues for leniency.
Luna refuses. She asks to raise Lize herself and teach him magic so he can escape the fate that's been written for him. That's the core of the show: a girl nobody can touch tries to save a boy everyone wants dead.
The mystery runs deeper than the curse. Claude, the crow who looks after Luna, suspects early on that Lize may be the crown prince, and the season later confirms he's someone important. There's also a darker cost. Lize slowly realizes that whenever Luna draws poison out of him, he loses memories and part of his sense of self. He starts keeping a secret second diary to prove that something is taking those memories. Luna's healing works, but it costs him who he is.
Champignon Witch Luna Love Interest: Lize or Henri?
The love triangle is the hardest part to watch. For black witches, love isn't just discouraged. The show presents it as taboo and physically debilitating. Luna still has feelings for Henri, a witch hunter whose memories of her were magically sealed. He's older now, with a wife and child, but his strong feelings for Luna keep breaking through that seal. Lize, meanwhile, is devoted to Luna and desperate to become worthy of her, and he sees a private moment between her and Henri that he can't forget. The season doesn't resolve the triangle, and the manga hasn't either.
The Deep Forest Household & Magical Familiars
Luna doesn't live completely alone. Her home, the Poison Mushroom House deep in the Black Forest, is full of small magical creatures, and they're the closest thing she has to a family. Claude is the sharp-tongued familiar of the Great Mage who watches over Luna. He can switch between crow and human form and complains constantly, but he steps in whenever it matters, and he openly opposes the plan to get rid of Lize. Minos is a cow-type creature, Merino is a sheep, and Sisi is a small cat-like creature with bat wings and a bell around its neck. They make the cottage feel like a home, which makes the threats outside it hit harder.
Each of these characters has a voice actor, and the casting tells you a lot about the tone the show is going for.
Champignon Witch Character Guide: Cast & Voice Actors
Luna's household comes first, then the people who threaten it.
Luna (CV: Haruka Shiraishi)
The Champignon Witch herself. Her touch is poisonous, but the potions she makes heal anyone who drinks them, and she gives them away without ever saying who made them.
Lize (CV: Yuki Sakakibara)
The cursed boy fated to become "the end of all things." Sakakibara also narrates the series.
Claude (CV: Jun Fukushima)
The Great Mage's crow familiar, who can take human form. He treats Luna with constant sarcasm, but he's on her side when it counts.
Minos (CV: Emiri Kato)
A cow-type magical creature who shares the Poison Mushroom House with Luna.
Merino (CV: Miho Okasaki)
A woolly sheep-type creature, the softest presence in Luna's forest household.
Sisi (CV: Misato Fukuen)
A small cat-like creature with bat wings and a bell, and another member of Luna's household.
Beyond the forest. The people who complicate Luna's life, whether they mean to or not.
Henri (CV: Shoya Chiba)
A witch hunter whose memories of Luna were sealed away. Chiba describes him as a cheerful, naive playboy who is genuinely kind to everyone.
Dorothy (CV: Akane Fujita)
The Cat Witch, one of the black witches, and arguably the least cruel of them.
Gus (CV: Kazuki Ura)
The Wind Magician. He skipped the council meeting, recognizes what Lize really is, and pushes to have him eliminated, so it's never clear whose side he's on.
Twelve episodes gave these characters their introduction. Their story continues in the manga.
Champignon no Majo Manga & Source Material: Where the Anime Adaptation Stands
Champignon Witch is a manga, not a light novel. Tachibana Higuchi, the creator of Alice Academy, launched it on Hakusensha's Manga Park on October 18, 2019, and a side story also ran in The Hana to Yume. Seven volumes were out as of January 2026. The manga releases slowly, at a little over one volume a year, and it went quiet for nine months between December 27, 2024 and September 5, 2025 without any announcement.
The anime starts at Chapter 1 and, by its finale, had adapted well over half of the manga. That's a lot of ground for one season, and it creates a problem for a sequel. No Season 2 has been announced, and the manga needs more time to get ahead of the anime again. The season ends with the central tension still unresolved: Lize's curse, his missing memories and Luna's feelings for Henri are all open.
If you want to read ahead, the Japanese chapters are on Manga Park. For English readers, Yen Press licensed the series at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, though a release date for the first English volume hasn't been announced.
