The schedule is simple. The premise is what makes people keep watching: why would demi-humans want to become human, and why hire a teacher who hates humans to show them how?

A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans Plot: A Teacher Who Hates People

Rei Hitoma used to be a teacher. After a student betrayed him and his colleagues framed him, he left the profession and shut himself away, convinced that people are the problem. When an online job post asks for "a teacher who cares about his students," he applies almost on impulse, passes every interview and ends up at a school deep in the mountains.

The school's students are demi-humans, and the academy exists to help them become human. Each one has a different reason: a mermaid who wants to dance, a rabbit who wants to find someone she lost, a mouse who wants to taste every human food. Rei's job is to teach them human behavior, emotions and social rules, the very things he has given up on. That's the hook. Every lesson he gives them forces him to look at what he decided to hate.

Is It a Romance? Rei and His Students

A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans is first a school comedy-drama, not a straight romance. The story's focus is each student's reason for wanting to become human and Rei slowly opening up again. Some students do grow attached to him, which is why "love interest" and "who does he end up with" are such popular searches.

Who, if anyone, Rei ends up with is a spoiler for the source material, so we won't answer it here. What matters in the anime is that each student's story changes Rei a little, and the more he cares, the harder it is to keep pretending he hates people.

To see why, you need to meet the class.

A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans Manga & Light Novel Guide: Where the Anime Picks Up

The original light novel by Natsume Kurusu, illustrated by Sai Izumi, was published by Media Factory under the MF Bunko J label from February 2022 to March 2026 and runs five volumes. A manga adaptation by Atsu Benino ran in Kadokawa's Monthly Shōnen Ace from August 2022 to July 2025 and was collected in four volumes. Yen Press publishes both in English, and the first English manga volume arrived in July 2025.

No official source gives the exact chapter where the anime stops. With the light novel complete at five volumes and the manga finished at four, the full story is already available in English, which is the quickest way to find out what happens after the anime.

That leaves the most-searched question about the series: will there be a Season 2, and when?
