The Kaya-chan Isn't Scary anime ran for 12 episodes from January 11 to March 29, 2026, simulcast on Crunchyroll, and it turned out to be one of the most quietly unsettling shows of the Winter 2026 season. East Fish Studio adapted Tarō Yuri's horror manga about a five-year-old the whole kindergarten treats as a menace: she kicks, punches, glares and ruins nap time. Every adult misreads what's happening. Kaya isn't misbehaving. She's fighting evil spirits that only she can see, with her fists, and only one teacher is starting to notice.

Kaya-chan Isn't Scary Release Date and Global Streaming Schedule

The full season is finished and streaming now, so you can watch all 12 episodes in a weekend. That's how it works best. Week to week, the show could feel like a run of short scares. Watched back to back, the case files build into something much darker about Kaya's family, and the later episodes hit harder for it.

Crunchyroll vs. Regional Platforms: Where to Watch

Crunchyroll is where to watch Kaya-chan Isn't Scary outside Japan. It licensed the series and simulcast each episode shortly after the Japanese broadcast. The series also has an English dub. In Japan, the show aired on TV Tokyo and other networks. Crunchyroll's catalog varies by country, so check the series page in your region before you start, but for most English-speaking viewers it's the one place to watch.

Broadcast Time & Episode Rollout

The premiere aired on TV Tokyo on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at 5:30 PM JST, and a new episode followed every Sunday until the finale on March 29. That early-evening slot is a bold choice for a show that opens with a possessed playground.

The schedule tells you when Kaya fights. It doesn't explain why a kindergartner has to.

Supernatural Kindergarten Plot: Action Horror Stakes

Kaya Satō is five years old, has powerful psychic abilities, and spends her days protecting her classmates from evil spirits nobody else can see. To everyone around her, those fights look like tantrums. The other children keep their distance, the teachers write her off as a problem child, and the spirits keep coming.

That gap between what happens and what the adults see drives the whole show. Most horror protects the child. This one makes the child the protector and gives her no credit at all. Each episode works like a small case with a new spirit to deal with, but the spirits aren't the only threat. Being misunderstood is its own kind of horror, and the show never lets you forget that Kaya fights alone.

Chie-sensei and Kaya-chan's Unlikely Partnership

Chie Hasumi is the one teacher who learns the truth about Kaya, and the moment she does, her job becomes much more dangerous. Chie has no powers. She can't fight a spirit or even see one clearly. What she can do is believe Kaya, cover for her and stand between her and every adult who wants to label her.

The cleansing itself is blunt. Kaya doesn't use talismans or chants. She beats the spirits until they're gone, then goes back to her crayons. Chie's role is quieter but just as important: she's the adult translator, explaining away bruises and broken furniture, and in the process she slowly becomes Kaya's first real ally. Their bond is the emotional core of the show, and it gets tested as soon as the show reveals more of Kaya's world, including her own family.

Character Spotlight & Voice Cast Breakdown

Is Kaya-chan scary? To the spirits, absolutely. To the people around her, she only looks scary: a small kid with a fierce stare and no patience. Kaya-chan Isn't Scary Manga Guide: Where the Anime Picks Up

The 12-episode anime covers up to around Chapter 46 of the manga, so start reading from Chapter 47. The Kaya-chan Isn't Scary manga is written and illustrated by Tarō Yuri and has run in Shinchosha's Kurage Bunch since April 1, 2022. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes it in English, with volumes starting in April 2025.

About 46 chapters in 12 episodes works out to roughly four chapters per episode. That's fast, but the manga's short, self-contained chapters make it workable. Picking up at Chapter 47 also means you'll see more of the Ebisumori clan, led by Kaya's aunt Nana, and the bigger mystery around her mother.

No second season has been announced, so for now the manga is the only way to find out what Kaya's family is hiding.
