Genshin Impact in late 2026 is not the same game it was at launch. Six years of content means a new account is staring down seven nations, dozens of story quests, and a character roster deep enough to be genuinely overwhelming. The good news: the early game has never been more generous, and the path to a strong, Spiral Abyss-ready account has never been more clearly mapped out. We tested this exact progression on a fresh account this patch — here's what actually matters.

Week One: Ignore Almost Everything Except This

Your first priority isn't your team, your build, or even your first ten-pull. It's your Adventure Rank (AR), because AR gates your resin cap, your domain difficulty, and your artifact drop quality. Everything else is secondary until you're past AR20.

  • Do every Archon Quest chapter you unlock. They're the single best source of Primogems, Mora, and AR experience in the game, and they gate access to entire regions.
  • Unlock statues and waypoints as you go, but don't 100% explore early areas. Chests scale with AR in some systems; a lot of early over-exploration is wasted effort you'll redo more efficiently later with better traversal tools (Claymore/Catalyst utility, movement Talents, etc.).
  • Do all four Daily Commissions every single day. This is roughly 60 free Primogems daily just for logging in and doing a five-minute checklist — it is the best time-to-reward ratio in the entire game and it does not scale down the longer you wait.
  • Clear Spiral Abyss floors 1-4 once for the one-time primogem rewards, even with a weak team. They're trivial and often skipped by new players who assume Abyss is end-game only.

At a realistic pace of two to three focused hours a day, most new players hit AR45 — the point where domains, artifacts, and combat difficulty all reach their "real" numbers — in roughly 75 to 90 days. That's the number to plan around, not a vague "eventually."

Resin: Spend It Like You Only Get 160 a Day (Because You Do)

Resin is Genshin's hardest resource cap and the one new players waste the most. The rule that actually holds up: spend resin only on guaranteed, permanent upgrades.

  1. Weekly bosses first. They cost more resin per run but hand out Talent-level-up materials you literally cannot get anywhere else, and the drop is guaranteed once per week per boss.
  2. Talent material domains second, tied to your current team's actual needs — don't farm materials for characters you don't own or don't plan to build.
  3. Weapon ascension material domains third.
  4. Do not farm artifact domains before AR45. Pre-45 artifact drops are capped at lower rarity and substat rolls than what you'll get post-45. Farming artifacts early is the single most common way new players burn resin for nothing. Bank your resin (or spend it on the categories above) until you cross that threshold.

Buy the daily 60-resin Fragile Resin refill from the shop with Mora every day it's available — Mora is abundant early and resin is not.

Primogems: One Rule, No Exceptions

Do not convert Primogems into Acquaint Fates (standard banner pulls) or waste them on the gacha shop's cosmetic bundles. Save every Primogem for Intertwined Fates, spent exclusively on limited character event banners. Standard 5-stars are obtainable for free at Wish milestones and through the Stardust shop over time; limited characters and their weapons are not.

New accounts in 2026 have an unusually strong tailwind here: version 6.3, "Luna IV," is running a new-player program worth 107 free pulls across 41 days — roughly 14,540 Primogems — handed out before you've even cleared your first proper domain. Combined with Beginner's Wishes (a discounted, guaranteed-5-star banner every new account gets access to), a new player can realistically walk away with two or three strong limited 4-stars and a guaranteed 5-star without spending a cent.

Build One Team, Not Five

New players consistently spread resources across too many half-built characters. Pick one four-person team early — ideally built around whatever limited 5-star or strong 4-star you pulled — and commit:

  • One main DPS (the character dealing most of your damage)
  • One sub-DPS or off-field damage dealer (elemental application matters more than raw stats here)
  • One support/buffer (Bennett, Kazuha-type utility, or an equivalent you've pulled)
  • One healer or shielder

Learn the elemental reactions your team actually triggers (Vaporize, Melt, or Electro-Charged are the easiest to understand and punish for beginners) rather than trying to master the whole elemental chart on day one.

The Bottom Line

New Genshin accounts fail for one of three reasons: burning resin on artifacts too early, converting Primogems away from limited banners, or spreading materials across too many characters. Fix those three habits, do your dailies without fail, and clear content roughly on the AR45-in-75-days pace — everything else in this game is genuinely optional polish on top of a solid foundation.
