Honkai: Star Rail's meta has kept shifting even years into the game's life, and Patch 4.5 marks one of the more notable reshuffles at the very top: The Herta's rerun tuning, combined with her dominance in Pure Fiction and Apocalyptic Shadow, has pushed her ahead of Acheron as the current #1 all-rounder. Meanwhile, the Elation archetype (nearly every enemy in the current Planarcadia rotation is weak to it) and the continued strength of Phainon-anchored teams have reshaped what "top tier" even means this patch.
Scope and methodology. This ranking assumes Eidolon 0 (no dupes) with a reasonably strong but not best-in-slot Light Cone and relic set, evaluated for endgame modes: Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction, and Apocalyptic Shadow. Star Rail has no PvP mode, so this is a cooperative clear-speed-and-consistency ranking. Crucially, HSR's meta is team-comp-driven rather than character-driven — a mid-tier DPS with the right two support pieces can outperform a nominally higher-tier DPS with mismatched teammates. Read tier placement as "value in an ideal team," not "value in isolation."
F2P vs. whale. Several S- and A-tier support units here (Robin, Ruan Mei, Silver Wolf, Bronya) are old enough to be reasonably farmable through reruns, making a strong support core achievable without heavy investment. The newest DPS units (Phainon, Tribbie, Castorice, Anaxa) require more recent pulls and are naturally whale-leaning picks — F2P players should prioritize completing a support core before chasing the newest limited DPS.
S Tier
The Herta now edges out Acheron for the top all-rounder slot thanks to rerun tuning and sustained dominance in AoE-heavy endgame modes, though Acheron remains an excellent pull in her own right. Feixiao and Phainon represent the two strongest current DPS archetypes — follow-up chaining and weakness-agnostic burst, respectively — while Robin, Ruan Mei, Aventurine and Tribbie form the backbone of nearly every top-performing team this patch.
A Tier
A deep, excellent tier. Castorice and Anaxa (both from the more recent story arc) offer strong, somewhat self-contained damage; Firefly and Jade remain top-shelf Break and Quantum follow-up carries respectively, just no longer the very best in their categories. Silver Wolf's weakness-implant utility is especially valuable given the current Elation-favoring meta, and Sparkle, Huohuo, Fu Xuan and Topaz continue to be excellent, reliable pieces of nearly any competitive team.
B Tier
Jingliu, Blade, Boothill, Jing Yuan and Dr. Ratio remain capable damage dealers that simply face stiffer competition than they used to. Bronya and Luocha are both still functional, just outshined by newer alternatives (Robin and Huohuo/Fu Xuan, respectively) in most team comps.
C Tier
Argenti, Clara, Gepard, Bailu and Hanya are all usable, especially for newer or lower-investment accounts, but none of them are competitive picks against modern endgame damage and survivability checks.
D Tier
Asta and Guinaifen occupy very narrow niches at this point — functional in specific early-game or budget contexts, but not worth prioritizing.
When this ranking might change
The Herta's position at #1 is fresh and could easily shift with the next balance pass or a strong new DPS release — this is one of the more volatile top-of-list calls we've made recently. Keep an eye on future Amphoreus-arc character releases, since Phainon, Castorice, Anaxa and Tribbie all came from that story content and more are likely on the way. As always, prioritize completing a support core (a Harmony buffer plus a sustain unit) before chasing the newest limited DPS — team synergy matters more in Star Rail than in almost any other gacha on this list.
